Is Organic Social Media Dead?

Is Organic Social Media Dead: A Review By Infinity Social Agency.

A Divided Opinion.

Social Media can be a tricky operation for a lot of people for a whole host of reasons. Firstly there’s an abundance of different channels to choose from and get your head around.

There’s then loads of different functions on all of those channels so it’s not surprising that some people have their challenges. Adding more to the headache, there’s also ‘Paid Advertising’ options across many platforms too.

If you are however pretty adept on social media you will most likely have also come across some challenges with organic social media such as algorithm changes, changes in social behaviour media and content prioritisation.

These issues have led people to ask the question; is organic social media dead? We’re here to divulge the debate!

A Difference in Your Insights.

One of the arguments for organic social media being dead is the dip in reach, engagement and views that people had been seeing over recent times on Instagram grid posts and Facebook posts in particularly.

We would say this is a fair and accurate representation for these two platform functions. However, the rise of short-form content has made up for this we believe. When Tik Tok came on the scene in Mid-2018 people and businesses were seeing spikes in views and to the appeal of most people, Tik Tok essentially took over organic social media popularity.

As a result, Instagram launched ‘Reels’ and Facebook followed as well as Youtube with ‘Youtube Shorts’.

Effectiveness of Hashtags.

Back in the day, hashtags were a brilliant way to extend your post reach and for people to find your posts. In our opinion, since it’s prime-time hashtags have become less and less useful on posts.

In your Insights you can see how much reach you got from your hashtags and the added benefit isn’t that great anymore. This isn’t to say that hashtags are useless though because that isn’t true.

We think that the best way to use hashtags nowadays is through effective community management which could take up a whole new blog of its own.

The Paid Advertising Takeover

Some cynics would say that this ‘plummet’ in organic social media is purposefully designed by the social media giants to encourage people to spend money, thus more revenue for them, on social media paid advertising campaigns.

You could argue this is a feasible point of view because any business’ aim is to make more money. You could also counter this by suggesting that the pleas for better organic social media were met with the introduction of Tik Tok and Instagram Reels etc.

Good Organic Helps Your Ad Strategy

Sometimes people forget just how well good organic social media can prepare you for your ad strategy. If you imagine spending loads of money on an ad campaign to then send people to a profile that looks un-used or not updated or not up to scratch, they’re going to be turned off completely.

That could cost you a website visit, purchase, enquiry or optimisation so it’s important to understand the benefit of organic social media in this way. Your accounts can act as a shop window to potential customers.

In Summary

In summary we hope we’ve given you a fairly balanced idea of both sides of the coin in this debate. A lot of this debate is made up of opinion but if we had to make it a yes/no answer from our point of view… we’d say organic social media certainly isn’t dead.

This is because of the many benefits mentioned as well as the resurgence of Tik Tok, Instagram Reels and more too in the last couple of years.

If you work hard to develop an audience and online community, encourage them to use features such as adding your profile to their ‘Following’ section and do other things as well, you can make organic social media work for you and your business.

After all, if organic social media was really dead, these platforms wouldn’t be used to frequently by so many people. We hope this has helped but please feel free to send us a message on social media if you have any questions.
